The King family has been farming in the Ghost Pine district, east of Three Hills since 1913. Homesteaded that year by Fred King and his wife Maggie, then carried on by their son Norman and his wife Evelyn, farming was significantly different then than it is today...
Norman & Evelyn's son Harold, wife Jan, along with their daughter Lori, husband David and family are continuing operations of the seed business, which was added in 1982. We built a new shop in 2021 with an indoor scale, a valued addition to our business. We are now cropping approx 3300 acres of wheat, barley, flax, oats, peas and canola.
The farm has evolved in many ways over the last 100+ years, but a few things have always remained - the importance of faith, family, community and service. We look forward to serving you on the farm.
Harold is our patriarch of the farm. Having lived here his entire life, and the 3rd generation on the farm, you could say farming is "in his blood." We credit Harold with being the hardest worker around, accomplishing more in a day than most do in a week. If you've ever picked up seed from the farm, you've almost definitely met Harold. Harold & Jan raised their three children on the farm, Kelly, Lori and Cara, and is happy to have another two generations of family working on the farm with him. Harold's favorite time of year on the farm is harvest, though with the addition of our new shop/office recently, we like to tease him his favorite time is coffee time ;)
Jan has worked on the farm since marrying Harold in 1976, helping to drive equipment or anything else that needed to be done. In recent years though she is enjoying her roles of making meals, giving rides, running for parts, or helping out with the grandkids (which Lori appreciates immensely)! Jan's favorite time of year on the farm is spring time!
David has been part of King's Seed Farm since 2007, when he and Lori got married and moved to Three Hills to farm full time with Harold & Jan. David was raised on a mixed cattle/grain farm near Veteran, and was a natural addition to our family & business.
When you pick up your seed, unless you come early in the spring, you may not see David as he is our CDO (Chief Drill Operator) ;), getting our crop in the ground so you have seed for next year!
David can however discuss with you everything you need to know about the varieties of seed we offer and which one(s) will be the best fit for your own farm's cropping plans.
Lori is Harold & Jan's middle child and married to David. Lori's days are spent behind the desk in the shop doing books, helping with the seeding rush, running equipment, going for parts and making sure everyone is fed. Her favorite time of year on the farm is spring time. When Lori's not on the farm, she can be found doing something with her Sunset Gourmet business, running their three girls to their dance, volleyball, 4-H or curling activities, or maybe even playing a curling game herself.
We've been fortunate to have Brad work with us full time since 2018. He is a valued employee on the farm, and when you come to pick up your seed, you will likely see him. Brad is able to take on any task, and is our expert sprayer operator and excellent mechanic. Brad's favorite time of year on the farm is spring & seeding. Brad lives in Three Hills with his wife Tara, and two sons Lane & Jaxon. When he's not at work, he spends his time coaching his boys hockey and baseball, and loves to camp.
David and Lori's three girls love life on the farm too. They enjoy their time spent riding in the equipment with whoever has room for them, helping to get meals out to the field, and helping out with any other odd jobs they are given. On their list of not-as-fun jobs they agree though, is picking rocks, cleaning the shop and sweeping bin pads ;).
Kelly & Cara are Harold & Jan's oldest and youngest children, who we are most grateful for when they come back to the farm to help out during the busy seasons. Extra hands are always appreciated!
Bear will most likely greet you when you come to pick up your seed. He's a friendly dog that loves his life on the farm, will dazzle you with his rolling over skills, and is always up for a good rub!
